Wednesday Word: Perseverance & “Conquering” the Half Marathon

This week I am once again joining my dear friend, Deb Runs, for her Wednesday Word.  Each week Deb chooses a word and invites her fellow bloggers to join her in a link up.

This week the word is Perseverance.

On Saturday May 30th I completed my 10th half marathon and 5th this spring.  There is something about that double diget number that is a cause for celebration.  For this post, I am going to take a stroll down memory lane and quickly revisit each experience. For each of these, there are highs, lowsand in betweens. I am VERY proud of getting here and grateful for those who helped me along the way!

The half distance is just hard enough to be challenging and just short enough to not wear you out for the long haul.  It takes perseverance to get to the finish line.

NY Road Runners Half
August 29, 2014
Sadly, I don’t have any photos from this race.  I do have my bib and a reported time somewhere, but no medal and no photos.  I ran this race AFTER running my first full the year before.  My BRF at the time had just moved to NYC and I joined her for a double loop around central park.  It was my last half for a LONG time, but I was happy to know I had once conquered the distance before attempting my next one over nine years later.

Diva Half Marathon
September 14, 2013

This was my official come back after mommyhood race.  My friend convinced me to run it and I signed up and trained all by myself all summer.
It was their FIRST time running this race in Loudoun County and it was a disaster.  Traffic problems had us starting an hour and a half late.

The course description was VERY off and the “rolling hills” were not quite as rolling as we anticipated.  I was MISERABLE crossing the finish line, but by the next day – I wanted to run another half.

Super Hero Half Marathon
May 18, 2014

I loved this race.  It was by far my slowest half, but I loved it.  Maybe it was the super hero costumes or the pretty course or just the wonderful company.  My 20 weeks pregnant sister-in-law and I had a ball taking pictures at every mile.  And my extended family – dad, brother, sister, nephews… were at the finish line to cheer us on.

AND it was a super cute medal – BONUS!

Diva Half Marathon
September 13, 2014

Despite swearing I would NEVER run this race again – after joining MRTT I was somehow convinced (because it is NOT hard!) to give Diva another try.  So I did.

I trained with friends, we went on a course practice run, AND I had buddies to run with the entire way.

It was 10,000x times better.  Diva took care of their issues and I took care of mine!

Potomac River Half Marathon
November 16, 2014
IMG_0165I wrote about this race when I first started blogging.  My goal leading up to this was a sub 2.  I was DETERMINED to make it happen after a long training season.

I had run hills.  I had PR’d every distance. I was ready.

And overtrained.  And tired.  And it was not my kind of race.   A no frills race on the Potomac just wasn’t me.  But I finished and set a PR.  And decided I needed to rest.  So rest I did!

Rock and Roll Half Marathon
March 14, 2015
IMG_0166This was one of my favorite races as I shared in my recap.  I traveled with my friends into DC and had a wonderful time.

I was injured and wet and needed to walk much more than I wanted to, but I made it through.

And loved the medal.  And loved how great I felt crossing that finish line.  And immediately signed up for 2016!

Reston Half Marathon
March 29, 2015
IMG_0167Another favorite race from this season, as I shared in my recap.

This race made me a half fanatic AND was hands down the most well organized event I had ever been part of!

The timing on this one will be tough for me next year with the Rock and Roll timing, but I will be back to race it again in the future.

Loudoun Half Marathon
April 12, 2015
IMG_0171Completing the trifecta of races I love is this local half.  My recap talks about all of the reasons this race was so special.

One of the most important moments for me was crossing the finish line and seeing my family.  Setting a good example for my son is one of my primary running motivators for keeping moving.

I will 100% be back for 2016!

Frederick Running Festival
May 2-3, 2015

Well run race weekend.  Beautiful medals.  Awesome swag.

TIRED, TIRED runner.  My race recap goes into details, but the bottom line – challenges are not for me.  I had SO much fun, but will not be doing this type of event for the forseeable future.

The irony, of course, is that I love challenges in every shape and form. But I think as I see 40 on the horizon, I have to figure out what works best for ME and my body. That is a hard enough challenge in itself!

Zooma Half Marathon
May 31, 2015
IMG_0172This race has been on my “list” forever – well ever since doing the 10k last year.  At the time, I dubbed the 10k my favorite race for the ladies specific swag, well organized experience, real bathrooms at the starting line and beautiful course.  My friends hopped on my bandwagon and joined me for Zooma weekend 2015!

My friend, DebRuns, wrote an amazing recap of our weekend adventure and race experience on her blog.

It was not quite as well done this year and now that I’ve done it – I doubt I will be back.

I LOVE the half marathon distance and will continue to add to my bling, but perhaps not at such a rapid pace!

  1. First of all – it is crazy that you ran your first half AFTER your first full! 🙂 The half marathon is my absolute favorite distance, and it was also my very first race. We have something in common: We both were gunning for a sub-2 in a November half (mine was Richmond in Nov. 2012) and both just missed it (I finished in 2:01:00). I don’t know about you, but I was still elated with my finish time.

  2. Congratulations on completing your Spring/Summer Half Tour! Hope your body gets some much deserved rest before we kick it into gear for Richmond!!! 🙂

  3. So happy that you were able to mentally and physically persevere through your spring half marathon tour, and I loved running our 10th half marathons together! ZOOMA was a fun weekend even if it was humid and hilly!

    Thanks for linking up!
