This week the word is REWARDING.
What I have found is that the things I find the most difficult are the most rewarding.
Having a baby.
Training for a race – any race – for the first time.
Conquering a fear.
It is those things that require me to step out of my comfort zone into something new that have the highest intrinsic reward. My mom always used to say, fake it until you make it. And that’s what happens when we don’t know what to do – we fake that we do until we are there. The things that come easy, the things we take for granted, are not nearly as rewarding as those we have cried and pushed and worked for. That’s why running is so powerful for so many of us, because we have to push ourselves so hard to get there.
Every time I want to try something new I have to keep repeating – PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION. I am not going to be a marathoner on training day 1. I am not going to know how to sew simply by attending one class and ordering all the supplies. And I am not going to know how to be a mom the second the doctor places the baby in my arms. For me, all things take an element of work. I have to get my hands dirty. I have to work for it.
But EVERY time – it’s worth it.
Every. Damn. Time.
